Treatments used for Premature Ejaculation

Saturday 12 January 2008 @ 5:27 pm

There are lots of different ways to treat premature ejaculation.

There are creams, pills, supplements and then there are also behavior techniques and devices that all promise to help you with your premature ejaculation.  Do they really work? Well some do, and some don’t.  But a certified sex therapist would probably say that the best way to cure premature ejaculation is to change how your body reacts during sex. In order to cure your ejaculation problem you will to do some ejaculatory control exercises and really learn how to listen to your body.

One quick cure that people try quite often is to wear a condom during sexual intercourse. Wearing a condom, especially a thick latex condom, will cause the penis to receive less stimulation making it easier for the man to last longer without ejaculating.  Many couples find that when they stop using condoms, if they want to have a baby for example, that the man will begin having premature ejaculations when they have sexual intercourse without a condom because of the increased sensation for the man.  If you are having a temporary problem with premature ejaculation try wearing a condom during sexual intercourse to cut down on the sensations that you feel and you may stop the premature ejaculations.

Another easy way to deal with premature ejaculation is to reduce stress. If you suffer from performance anxiety you can reduce your performance anxiety by talking to your partner about sex beforehand. Make a deal that if you have a premature ejaculation you will give her or him oral sex or something else that she or he finds pleasurable until they climax.  Taking the pressure off you to cause your partner’s climax through intercourse may be enough to stop the premature ejaculations that you have been having.

There are also creams that you can put on your penis that will desensitize your penis making it possible for you to last longer without ejaculating. If you ejaculate even before penetration or immediately after penetration try putting on a desensitizing cream and then a latex condom.  That should provide immediate help for premature ejaculations. There are lots of over the counter creams and herbal supplements that promise to stop premature ejaculation. Some work effectively and some don’t.

There is no drug that is made specifically to treat premature ejaculation but there are some drugs that can help desensitize the penis enough to stop premature ejaculation. Drugs that are used to treat depression or ADD and ADHD often have a side effect of desensitizing the penis making it possible for men to last longer without ejaculating during sex. While the drugs are not specifically made to combat premature ejaculation since they have a strong track record of causing men to be able to have intercourse longer without ejaculating many doctors will prescribe those drugs to men that are having premature ejaculations.

The Truth about Premature Ejaculation

Saturday 12 January 2008 @ 5:15 pm

Here are some common myths about premature ejaculation and the truth behind the myth.

One of the most commonly told myths about premature ejaculation is that a man can last longer if he thinks about something that is unsexy.  This is not true. While it can be the case that a man can lose his arousal by thinking about something he finds unappealing the reason for premature ejaculation is over stimulation of the reproductive system and simply thinking of something unappealing won’t lessen arousal.  There are ways to last longer during sex using ejaculatory control methods like the stop-start method where the man slows down his sexual response by using several different techniques but just thinking about something un sexy won’t have that effect.  So even though it would be nice if it were really that easy solving the premature ejaculation problem isn’t as easy as just thinking about something un sexy.

Another very common myth about premature ejaculation is that premature ejaculation is the result of not using ejaculatory control and that some men can’t use ejaculatory control in order to stop premature ejaculation. This is not true. Any man can learn to use ejaculatory control to help stop premature ejaculation. There is not a particular set of characteristics that a man must have in order to be able to use ejaculatory control.  Using ejaculatory control to stop premature ejaculation is a skill and like most skills it takes practice. But, any man who is willing to take the time and effort to learn ejaculatory control skills can easily use ejaculatory control skills to help solve the problem of premature ejaculation.

Probably the most common myth that is told about premature ejaculation is that it isn’t a common problem.  It is a very common problem.  Most men will experience premature ejaculation at some point in their lives.  Most men who take prescription drugs for various conditions will experience some sexual side effects including premature ejaculation as a result of taking those drugs.  There are ways to treat the problem of premature ejaculation but it’s a very common problem that affects most men at some point in their lives. If you are having trouble with premature ejaculations then you need to know that you are not alone, and you are certainly not the only man who has suffered from premature ejaculations.  If you ask your brothers, fathers and friends chances are that if they are being honest with you they will say that they have also experienced premature ejaculations at some point in their lives.

Psychological Counseling For Premature Ejaculation?

Saturday 12 January 2008 @ 5:11 pm

Who is the most at risk of premature ejaculation?

Most doctors agree that every man will experience premature ejaculation at some point in his life, so what men are the most at risk for developing long term problems with premature ejaculation?

The research isn’t definitive. Some researchers say that particular groups of men are more likely to develop premature ejaculation problems than other groups.   It does appear that teenage boys and younger men are the most at risk of having problems with premature ejaculation just to due to the fact that they haven’t learned regular ejaculatory control.

Some men might not realize that ejaculatory control is a skill they can learn and they might think that they will always be victims of premature ejaculation.  Other men, particularly older men or men who have health problems, might find that they develop a problem with premature ejaculation that is caused by their health conditions or the medications they take for those health conditions.

Some men who are involved in stressful careers or have family stress might develop short term problems with premature ejaculation as a result of stress.  If the problem is just because of stress then it will usually go away once the stress in your life starts to lessen.  If it doesn’t go away even after the stress in your life subsides then you should talk to your partner and consider seeing a doctor who can help you overcome premature ejaculation.

Men who suffer from some psychological disorders like depression might also find that they are having problems with premature ejaculation.  Depression and other psychological problems can cause premature ejaculation.  The medications commonly used to treat depression and some other disorders like ADD or ADHD can also cause premature ejaculation in some men.  If you are taking medication for Depression or a psychological disorder you should talk to your doctor to find out if premature ejaculation could be a side effect of the medication.

Men who suffer from performance anxiety or are overly concerned about their sexual performance may also suffer from premature ejaculation as a consequence of their anxiety. If your performance anxiety is becoming overwhelming you should talk to your partner about your fears and if necessary consult a psychologist who can help you deal with your performance anxiety.

Are you repressed? Men who are very sexually repressed often suffer from premature ejaculation because they feel guilty about enjoying sex and just want to achieve climax as quickly as possible.  Sexual repression usually requires psychological treatment to overcome but it can be overcome.  If you were raised in a very strict household or a very religious household where you were taught to associate a lot of guilt and shame with sex then you may develop a problem with premature ejaculation.  Psychological counseling can be a very effective tool in dealing with sexual repression and premature ejaculation.

Premature Ejaculation Treatment With Anti-depressants

Wednesday 9 January 2008 @ 5:16 pm

Do Anti-depressants really work for premature ejaculation?

It is a possible treatment that has been suggested for premature ejaculation and administering one of the drugs in the drug family known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs are more commonly referred to as anti-depressants and include such drugs as Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac.

Do SSRIs work to treat premature ejaculation?
That is still a debated issue inside the medical community. Some believe that SSRIs can be effective as treatments for premature ejaculation. The Food and Drug Administration has still not approved SSRIs for the particular use of treating premature ejaculation. That does make some rather cautious doctors reluctant to prescribe them for this use. However, this is a very common approach. Some people who have taken them for this purpose are pleased with the results they have received.

Possible benefits of SSRI treatment
The hope is that SSRI treatment can produce impressive delays in ejaculation. This has been observed in some people who take daily SSRI treatment. The delay in ejaculation is also found in men with erectile difficulties. The SSRI drugs are the most effective solution. They are prescribed in lower dosages than for people taking them for treatment of depression.

Possible negatives of SSRI treatment
SSRI drugs are very powerful drugs. They are not without significant side effects. No one should take SSRI’s lightly. SSRI’s may be worth a try but anyone should approach the use of anti-depressants with caution. Every body responds differently. Most men need to try more than one anti-depressant to find a balance between intended and useful effects and inconvenient side effects. Another factor is that for depression SSRIs take a long time to become effective, and that is also true for the anti premature ejaculation effect. Take a hard look at the sexual side effects of these drugs too. At the lower doses it may not be a problem; however, some of them have a nasty habit of killing libido.

Other considerations
Be patient. Taper the use of SSRIs on and off slowly with the only exception being an allergic or other sudden reaction that may require intervention. Remember that the effects can be slow in coming, and your response will be gradual. Suddenly starting or stopping any drug can put you in an undesirable condition, exacerbating the very symptoms that made you seek therapy. Monitor and change doses gradually, a 10% dose change per week is a rule of thumb, not an absolute standard but it works for most. If any of the listed side effects concern you, you can get a test for that condition BEFORE starting the new drug. However, if the listed side effect is, for example, retrograde ejaculation, a good idea is to keep a log or medical record as to your experience with that condition before starting therapy. That is the best way to have a valid evaluation of your actual side effects after therapy begins. In conclusion, SSRI treatment could definitely be worth a try for people who suffer from premature ejaculation. It could very well be the best solution if it works.
