Treatment for back pain does not give instantaneous feedback or results. First step taken by individuals is alleviating back pain through ice or heat and medications. If this doesn’t show effects medical evaluation was the next step. The symptoms of the patient along with the period of back pain are taken into account for treatment. Patients with acute back pain need not worry as the period is short and it resolves by itself. Sub-acute needs attention, as the period is longer than acute. Back pain has to be treated if it’s chronic which means the presence of pain for more than 3 months. Pain for day’s together, awakening during sleep in the night because of pain, Dysfunction of bowel or bladder, fever and infections with unusual symptoms are warning signs to start treatment.
Back pain treatments that are done at home like applying ice above the strained muscle relieve pain and heat can be applied to relax the stiff muscles. Bed rest for two days is recommended and after rest normal activity can be done.
The commonly prescribed medication for pain relief is ibrufen and also acetaminophen but the advice of a physician is a must for all medications. For Acute back pain narcotic and non-narcotic pain relievers are prescribed. Anti-inflammatory drugs are also suggested. Oral steroids are also used but they have after effects like headache and weakening of bones. Chronic back pain, which occurs due to damage of nerves, is treated by tricyclic antidepressants and nortriptyline. Side effects like constipation, dryness in the mouth and lethargy are possible.
Steroid injections are injected in the membrane of nerve roots to reduce the pain instantaneously to a certain extent. Physical therapy is normally practiced to reduce pain, bring back normal activity, boost functions and avoid recurrences. Massage therapy influences the increase of circulation of blood in the affected area. Massage therapy has various devices to be used and techniques that can be followed. Electrotherapy is also very effective as it passes mild currents on the skin and stimulates contraction of muscles, strengthening of muscles and increasing the level of neurochemicals on the area. Ultra sound reduces pains and muscle spasms as the sound in the form of waves penetrates into the skin and makes the soft tissues to vibrate. It also creates gentle heat, which in turn increases the flow of blood in the body. Acupuncture helps in reducing back pain without medication and the side effects are less. Thin –hair needles are inserted inside the skin for less than 30 seconds. But frequent sessions have to be undergone.
Surgery is undergone for chronic back pain with symptoms like compression of spinal cord, weakness of muscles and problems in bowel or balder. The herniated disc, which presses the nerves, is removed by discectomy. Spinal cord gets compression by the lamina and this can be removed by Laminectomy. Bone grafting is also done for spinal instability.
Exercise strengthens bones and minimizes injury risk. Regular exercise rectifies physical problems and prevents from new ones. For back pain exercise helps in speedy recovery and makes the back muscles strong. The soft tissue around the spine, which includes the ligaments, the muscles and tendons, gets benefited through stretching. Different muscles when stretched gains flexibility and also maintain mobility. The muscles targeted to stretch are Hamstrings (back part of leg), Piriformis (back part of thigh bone and the spine), Psoas Major (front part of lower spine) and the Gluteus muscles (around the buttocks). Muscle flexibility increases if stretching is done daily and frequently. Aerobics with walking, bicycling and water therapy minimizes pain throughout the body. Prevention can be done through maintaining weight, healthy diet, awareness of suitable body mechanics and avoiding same posture for longer duration.

The pain in lower part of back is a common muscular problem. It is of three types.
• Acute- this is caused due to accidents or fall.
• Sub acute
• Chronic- this occurs due to course of time like ageing weakness in joints, etc
There are various exercises for curing lower back pain.
These are classified under three heads
1. Initial
2. Intermediate
3. Advanced
Initial lower back pain exercises
• Ankle pumps- moving your ankles up and down while lying on your back
• Heel slides- slowly bending and straightening your knee while lying on your back
• Abdominal contraction- lying down on your back. Tighten your abdominal muscles to squeeze your ribs down toward ground.
• Wall squats- stand while leaning against a wall. Bend both knees to 45 degrees but keep your abdominal muscles tight.
• Heel raiser- raise upon your heels and down.
• Straight leg raiser- lying on your back, keep one leg straight and other leg bent. Slowly lift straight leg up in air and bring down.
Intermediate lower back pain exercises
• Single knee chest stretch- lying on back, both knees straight. Bring one knee up toward your chest.
• Hamstring stretch- lying on back with holding one of your thighs in air.
Swiss ball lower back pain exercises
• Lying on your back, as your knees is bending upon the ball. Raise your arm over head and corresponding other leg in air.
• Sitting on the ball, raise your arm overhead and other corresponding leg up from ground about 2 inches in air
• Stand with wall, while ball is in between you and wall. Slowly start bending your knees to 45 degrees, and raise your both arms overhead
• Lying on stomach over the ball, alternatively raise each of your arm and leg in air one by one
Advanced lower back pain exercises
• Hip flexor stretch- lying on bed, holds knees towards your chest. Leave the knees one by one.
• Piriformis stretch- while lying on your back, cross your legs and pull opposite knees.
Keep yourself in one position at least for 10 seconds and repeat all the exercises for at least 10 times.

To avoid physical pain, most people usually avoid engaging in strenuous activities and vigorous movements of the body. However, inactivity may actually worsen the condition and result in more pain in the long run. Since the human body is designed to be in motion regardless of your health condition, making your body inactive will lead to muscle degeneration. Through regular exercise, people can avoid pain or, at least, have an effective means of attaining pain relief therapy.
Once the muscles start to deteriorate, other problems may soon develop such as diminishing bone density, depression, and a weakened heart. On the contrary, regular exercise can help keep joints flexible and strong. Moreover, physical activity promotes pain relief by releasing mood-enhancing chemicals in the body that help deal with arthritic pain and lessen pain perception.
The three types of exercise recommended for arthritis patients involves the following:
Flexibility Workouts
Cardiovascular Workouts
Strength Conditioning
Flexibility workouts involve stretches that can help enhance range of motion. Cardiovascular includes aerobic workouts, walking, water exercises, and cycling. Strength conditioning, includes isometric or isotonic workouts. Isometric workouts are static exercises that involve applying resistance without moving the joint. An example of isometric workout is pressing your hands against the wall while standing. It works out your chest muscle without joint movement. Isotonic workouts, on the other hand, use the full range of motion such as bicep curls and leg extensions.
Different exercises work for different individuals. A certain exercise that works for you may not work for your buddy. Always remember to apply appropriate effort in proper form to avoid further injury and minimize pain. Consult a doctor or a well-trained fitness instructor before engaging in a fitness program.
While regular exercise promotes natural pain relief by releasing mood-enhancing chemicals in the body that reduce perception of pain, being overweight can takes its toll on the joints due to the excess poundage they have to carry. A variety of weight loss programs are available everywhere but a nutritionally-balanced diet, besides regular physical activity, is a proven method for weight loss.
On the other hand, weight loss with a poor diet may result to being underweight that leads to inactivity. When the hormone levels are off, it can aggravate pain. While limiting intake of animal protein and saturated fat is ideally healthy, people need not become vegetarians to avail of pain relief benefits from

Finding Relief From Back Pain by Marlene Baliss
Imagine what life would be like if you felt searing pain with every breath and every movement. If you suffer with back pain, that’s how life can be.
In 2002, a study was conducted that showed back pain as a leading cause of doctor’s appointments and missed work. Back pain is, in fact, second only to headaches as the most common neurological ailment suffered by people in the United States.
The back pain experienced by most people is the result of an injury or other underlying spinal problem. The muscles, bones or soft tissues can all lend to back pain.
Back pain strikes hard. It affects your ability to work, play and lead any sort of normal lifestyle. Fortunately, it’s uncommon for back pain to signify a serious underlying condition. Most cases of back pain are relatively short term and can last from several days to a few weeks. If you suffer with back pain, there are a number of treatment methods and remedies available. However, no single method will bring relief to every patient.
If you are prone to episodes of back pain, you should try to avoid certain activities, such as heavy lifting. Should back pain hit you hard, there are some things that you can do to bring relief:
Rest and Relaxation
When your back is injured, the best way to find relief is by lying on your back, on the floor. Bend your knees and hips slightly, and place pillows under your knees for support. This position is helpful, as it takes the weight and pressure off of your back. You may choose to assume the same position, but with your feet propped up on a chair. First, lie with your back flat against the floor. Use a pillow to support your head. Then, bend your knees so that the backs of your legs are resting on a pillow placed on top of the seat of the chair.
With this type of rest, it can be possible to achieve back pain relief after a day or two. If the pain does not stop, see a doctor. Resting in this manner for more than two days may cause your muscles to weaken, leading to even longer recovery period.
Turn Up the Heat
Mother always knew it, yet researchers can’t prove it; still, many people swear by the power of heat for relieving back pain. Despite the lack of medical proof, a simple heating pad can deliver a relaxing effect for muscle spasms, which are leading contributors to back pain.
The best way to find relief using a heating pad is to place the pad over the painful section of your back, and then leave it in place for 20 to 30 minutes. Ice packs may also be used in this same manner. A massage following the hot or cold pack treatment is especially beneficial.
Pain Medications
When you want fast-acting back pain relief, you can try one of many medications. Drugstores, supermarkets, department stores and well-stocked corner stores carry non-prescription medications to bring relief for your pain and reduce swelling. Some of the more common over-the-counter remedies are aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ketoprofen (Orudis), naproxen (Aleve) and ibuprofen (Motrin).
If you are one of the millions of people who are missing work and play due to back pain, it’s time to take your life back. Try one of these back pain relief methods, or ask your doctor for other treatment options.
