Anti-aging Ingredients 101

Wednesday 17 September 2008 @ 10:59 am

Author: Angie Ng It has been said that you can tell if a person is aging because of the wrinkles on his or her face. It is true that wrinkle comes with aging but there are other causes that lead to a person looking older than he or she really should.

What are these wrinkle causes?

How does one find an anti aging skin care treatment for wrinkles?

So why do old people have wrinkles? This is because skin becomes less elastic and connective tissues containing collagen and other proteins degrade over time. Thus, the skin become loose and lines are formed on the face. Older people’s skin has more difficulty regenerating or repairing itself after damage.

Wrinkles can also be created by habitual facial muscle contractions, such as frowning, or creasing the brow. So it explains why smiling is better than frowning. People who lack sleep or who are overstressed can also be candidates for wrinkles. Skin loses its elasticity if insufficient rest is obtained.

Photo-aging is the occurrence of wrinkles and skin damage caused by exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Free radicals or toxic oxygen species form on the skin when under the sun for too long. This can lead to various conditions, such as sunburn and even skin cancer. Smoking and poor diet may also lead to wrinkles, as these introduce toxins to the body.

One anti aging skin care treatment is to apply anti aging wrinkle creams and lotions on the face. These cosmetic products should contain vitamins and antioxidants to protect the skin and get rid of active oxygen species.

Other forms of anti aging skin care treatment, includes face lifts, microdermabrasion, wrinkle filler injections, Botox injections, and chemical peels. The basic principle behind these cosmetic surgery methods is that skin must be renewed and tightened so that wrinkles will disappear. In comparison to anti aging wrinkle creams, these clinical methods are more expensive, and have known side effects that occur in some people.

Dealing With Wrinkles: Skin Care Basics

Author: Ryan J Bell

Wrinkles are commonly associated with aging. However, when proper skin care is neglected, wrinkles can appear sooner than they should. An assortment of products and treatments are available that promise to reduce and even eliminate wrinkles. Some promise more than they can deliver. Below, we’ll briefly discuss the factors that cause wrinkles. We’ll also describe a few common treatments (including wrinkle creams) and what steps you can take today in order to prevent wrinkles.

How Wrinkles Happen

Wrinkles appear and increase with age. The reason is due to the eventual breakdown of collagen fibers and the thinning of the skin. As the skin becomes thinner, it’s less capable of retaining moisture. When the moisture is released, the skin becomes dry. The collagen fibers begin to deteriorate which causes the skin to lose its former elasticity. Meanwhile, the subcutaneous layer (beneath the dermis) begins to lose its ability to support the dermis and epidermis. As these events converge, the skin experiences increased sagging and wrinkling.

Excessive exposure to direct sunlight can result in premature wrinkling. This happens as a result of the sun’s UV rays penetrating the epidermis and dermis. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation leads to accelerated collagen deterioration, thinning of the epidermis and the stimulation of free radicals.

Common Treatments For Wrinkles

There are several solutions that are used to battle wrinkles. Vitamin A acid (also called tretinoin) is commonly found in wrinkle creams while alpha-hydroxy acids and various antioxidants are often found in similar products. Vitamin A acid has the longest history of positive results when applied to mild wrinkles and fine facial lines.

Other solutions include peels, microdermabrasions and various forms of resurfacing procedures (performed by doctors). The most effective peels use salicylic or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate beneath the top layers of skin. Microdermabrasions (and dermabrasions) involve sanding the skin to provide a smoother appearance and texture. Laser resurfacing has the same effect as a dermabrasion but with a higher level of precision. It also encourages the production of collagen within the skin.

Efficacy Of Wrinkle Creams

Wrinkle creams are responsible for a large portion of the skin care industry’s multi-billion dollar revenues. This is partially due to manufacturers’ advertising which implies the high level of effectiveness of these creams. In truth, wrinkle creams have varying levels of efficacy. It’s largely dependent upon the active ingredients used within the creams, the concentrations of those ingredients and how consistently the creams are applied. Also, while some active ingredients have successfully reduced the severity of mild wrinkles, most wrinkle creams haven’t undergone rigorous clinical testing.

Action Steps For Preventing Wrinkles

Taking a preventative approach to skin care has proven effective for slowing the development of wrinkles. Here are 3 steps you can take today to reduce the likelihood of your skin aging prematurely.

#1 - Use a sunscreen that offers protection from UVA and UVB rays. Don’t shop by SPF alone. Look on the back of the packaging for ingredients like ecamsule, titanium dioxide and avobenzone.

#2 - Stop smoking. The smoke that you inhale can devastate your skin over time. You won’t see the effects immediately, but cigarette smoke will accelerate your skin’s aging process.

#3 - Moisturize your skin. Help your skin retain water and moisture by using a moisturizer that is rich with antioxidants. It can prevent further skin damage while encouraging the production of collagen fibers.

The basics of skin care are built upon a foundation of preventative measures. These measures prolong the youthful appearance of your skin while sustaining its health. In doing so, they prevent the deterioration of collagen fibers and loss of elasticity, thereby avoiding the onset of wrinkles. Use the action steps above to preserve your skin’s smooth texture.

Wrinkle Cream From Lifecell

What can be a more stimulating way to relieve one’s self of the daily grind of work than to go out to the beach and stay in the sun, but wait till you hear the bottom line on wrinkles. It is a fact that skin ages, as much as our physical appearance and it does that all over our body, especially on parts of the skin that is most often exposed to the sun. These ageing come in the form of changes brought on by sun damage called photoaging, characterized by dryness or roughness, sagginess, skin growths called ‘liver spots’ or keratoses and  commonly  wrinkles.

There are two categories for wrinkles, which involves two varying degrees of wrinkle development, which are fine surface lines and deep skin furrows, for which common and general wrinkle treatments are more effective for the former, but the latter would require more aggressive therapy like long-term dermatological or plastic surgery.

Among the number one factors that contribute to facial skin wrinkles are smoking, which dries out the skin since it reduces moisture, skin type as well, since people with light-colored skin and blue eyes are prone  to sun damage, hereditary peculiarities since there are family lines that are more prone to skin wrinkles, hairstyle, which obviously depends on how much skin is covered by the hair and protected from the sun, dress style, since this will also determine how much skin is covered or left exposed to the sun; and finally, recreational and occupational sun exposure that may spans over a period of years.

Currently, there are a lot of treatments obtainable in the market today, both over the counter and prescription treatments, among them, Vitamin A acid, alpha hydroxy acids, antioxidants and moisturizers. These treatment methods also include cosmetic procedures like glycolic acid peels deep peels, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, surgical procedures and the ever popular Botox.

There is a popular belief that chronic stress can be a cause of aging in people, thus, the look of skin wrinkles, but most of these evidences are not specifically based on scientific findings, rather, more on people’s observations and perceptions. There is, however, a little-known yet significant study back in 2004 that established the link between between continuing stress and aging. The study revealed that telomeres, these are structures located at the end of chromosomes that shorten with aging, also tend to shorten prematurely in subjects that are subjected to long-term psychological stress, resulting to prematurely ‘aging’ cells.

Although the results of this study shows a link between cellular aging and stress, the direct relationship of stress on aging is far complex and has not yet been fully understood nor backed with incontrovertible findings. However, it could still be considered an ounce of prevention to keep stress at bay, since it can indeed have adverse effects on physical and emotional health. Anybody concerned about getting wrinkles or other signs of aging should still be advised to practice a healthy and, better, a stress-free lifestyle or if not possible, even just keeping stress levels under control.

Finally, exposure to ultraviolet light, whether UVA or UVB, from sunlight accounts for most symptoms of premature skin aging, especially since most of the photoaging effects occur by the late teenage years around 19-20 years and so on. Thus, the amount of damage to the skin, especially the presence of wrinkles is determined by the total lifetime of exposure to radiation and the person’s pigment protection. These may be the lowdown on wrinkles, but don’t be anxious, with all the tips and products like lifecell wrinkle cream available everywhere, there’s no need to hide and fear wrinkles.
